Flora and Fauna at Chelsworth - Studying Native Micro Bats

From the FRIENDS OF WILSON RESERVE NEWSLETTER - NUMBER 190 - MARCH 2012

The "Friends of Wilson Reserve" on the Yarra near Chelsworth have a bat box project, involving 20 bat roost boxes used by several species of microbats. One resident joined the group in 2008 and became so interested in the Bat Project that he has also started a volunteer conservation effort at the Burke Rd billabong 1 KM further upstream - Data on this bat population is now being collected routinely as well. This is the only situation in Melbourne at which adjacent bat populations are being studied. It provides an opportunity to learn about the mixing and separation of bat groups not otherwise available.

If you are interested to find out more about microbats or how to join the monthly excursions caring for and studying this unique environment around the Yarra please contact :

Sports Pavilion

Year of Completion - 1975

Running

East Ivanhoe Boulevard _ East Ivanhoe

This run starts in quiet little Pitcher Park in Alphington, skirting the park and heading down the leafy side streets, past Alphington station to get to Heidelberg Road. We don’t run along busy Heidelberg Road for long before turning right into the Boulevard. From here it’s a lovely run along parkland, including Chelsworth Park, with lots of twists and turns and some pleasantly challenging hills. We turned left along Ivanhoe Park and headed back on Lower Heidelberg Road. But if you’re up for a longer run, turn right and continue along the Boulevard, which goes all the way through to Burke Road.

Distance: 12km return
Time: 70minutes
Difficulty: 7/10
Water: Yes
Start and finish: Pitcher Park, Alphington, Melway 31 B9

Prizes up for grabs at Chelsworth’s dog day

THE c u t e s t , largest, smallest, happiest and even ugliest dogs will be in contention for prizes at an annual event celebrating everything special about man’s best friend.

The Community Chelsworth Park Dog Day will take place at the Ivanhoe reserve between noon and 2pm on Saturday, August 25 with numerous prizes and activities on offer.

Co- ordinator Lawrence Tutton said almost 100 dogs attended last year’s inaugural event.

‘‘A lot of people walk their dogs in Chelsworth Park and so the point of the day is not only for them to come together but also encourage them to be a bit more responsible,’’ he said.
